For organizations of all sizes, the data explosion is a story that keeps getting worse. It’s a primary contributor to IT sprawl—which is taking business performance to the breaking point.
One way to deal with the data explosion is to put data deduplication to work in a converged infrastructure. This allows you to open up storage capacity that would have otherwise been wasted by storing duplicate data.

The idea behind data deduplication is simple: Stop storing the same data over and over. Data deduplication looks for blocks of identical data within files. If only one block within a file has changed, then only that block is backed up. All the other blocks are replaced with pointers to existing blocks.

Data Deduplication: A simple idea that generates big savings.

Data deduplication can save a tremendous amount of storage capacity. In HP’s experience, deduplication can reduce your need for backup storage space by 10 to 50 times. Your specific savings will depend on the number of backups, your data retention policy and how much your data changes.
Given the savings potential, it’s no surprise that data deduplication has a lot of market momentum. The only thing holding it back is complexity, which increase as you scale. First-generation implementations can be extremely complex, thanks to point solutions, rigid solution stacks, scalability limitations and fragmented approaches.

To help your organization move beyond these challenges, HP is launching a new generation of technology. This technology takes data deduplication to a new level of scalability and performance. It’s called HP StoreOnce deduplication software, and it’s being delivered first on HP StorageWorks D2D Backup Systems.
