Western Digital
Western Digital, or WD, is one of the largest manufacturers of storage data devices and other computer electronic parts and home entertainment. WD is known for reliability and high performance of its internal or external hard drives and solid state that store digital information and has earned good reputation among top markets such as health, military, aerospace, manufacturing and telecommunications systems. Western Digital invests on its passion and knowledge in innovating storage technology, to provide customers with a great experience in securing important data or digital information from loss or corruption.
First established in 1970 as General Digital Corporation by Alvin Philipps, it got its backing with individual investors and most especially that of Emerson Electronic. A year later, the company changed its name to Western Digital. For the first few years of its existence, WD focused its industry in manufacturing semiconductor products such as the universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter chip for telecommunications. By 1975, Western Digital became one of the largest manufacturers of calculator chips. However, the oil crisis and its major client ran kaput, the company declared bankruptcy under Chapter 11. Charles Misler was able to save the said company.
Five years later, Western Digital was back on its feet. The company flourished during the introduction of IBM’s PC in the market, in which it provided controller chips. In 1988, Western Digital’s fate in computer manufacturing industry changed as it acquired Tandon Corporation, a company that specializes on disk drive assets. From then on, WD focused its specialty towards disk drive manufacturing and development, as demand was high during the late 1980s and 1990s because of the development of low-cost PCs—the Caviar drive was born.
Having been through a test of time and the elements, Western Digital became one of the most recognized and reliable brands in the industry today. The growth of usage in digital content has sparked a demand for increasing storage devices, not just only on desktops and notebook computers, but also on mobile devices, enterprise storage systems, RAID servers, and even on home entertainment. Western Digital aims to provide its clients with higher capacity hard drives, reliable yet simpler to use, such as My Book, My Passport, Caviar, VelociRaptor, SiliconEdge and SiliconDrive solid state drives, and more.
